Emergency kit #eqnz
On the day of the September 2010 earthquake I spent the day anxiously making up an emergency kit. It lived in the dining room, by the kitchen door, for a month. On 22nd February I grabbed it as we ran from our house through water, silt and sewage. We used a lot of the items over the subsequent days. I thought I’d list the contents, both to refer back to, and as a help to others if needed.

Dunedin Flats research receives funding from MCH →
I’m very fortunate to have been accepted, along with 9 others, as a recipient of the 2011 New Zealand History Research Trust Fund from Ministry of Culture and Heritage. This is going to be enormously helpful in finishing the research for the book, and in particular, fund the purchase of images to illustrate it.
My greatful thanks to the Ministry for this opportunity.

Inaugural Episto Tweet conference #twecon
On Friday 3 December 2010, 2 days after delivering the paper in person at LIANZA 2010, I took part in the wonderful inaugural #twecon, organised by @HORansome (Matthew Dentith). He has archived the entire experience on his blog.
All of the papers were interesting, challenging and thought provoking, just as all good conferences are. I was amazed at the quality of information passed on in six short...

Kid's voluntary library job ends →
I was sad to read this article in the Lufkin Daily News. I’m not sure what public library policy is in New Zealand for children being able to visit the library alone (let me know if you do). I really hope Abby’s not put off continuing to visit the library - she sounds like a really special kid, someone who probably really needs to have this place in her life.
I know of a couple of...

Last call for stories - flat names, the book
Last night I put out a last call for stories and photos that can be contributed to the book I’m writing about Dunedin’s named student flats.
There’s been a bit of a rush on photo tagging which is always good to see, and for me, it means I have a way of getting in touch with people who knew these flats and may have a tale to tell.
The flats tagged in the last 24 hours are: Pink...

Hanging Out: preserving an ephemeral print culture... →
I’m giving a paper at the LIANZA conference in Dunedin this year about the Dunedin Student Flat Names project. Here’s the abstract:
This is a project about keeping, sharing and making stories. It’s about preserving some rather unique ephemeral artefacts but also about creating content through research and story collection to create a context for these artefacts. It’s a project that...

I’m (still) reading “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” (albeit a few other books have been read between mentionings) and currently Barbara is talking about growing asparagus. I intended to lay a bed of the green stuff this season, in fact, I should have done it already. Maybe I’ll get onto it today …

Creating more space
A couple of weeks ago I heard a rumour the Ori (Oriental Tavern) had been bought by the University. “NO”, I implored, slightly scandalised, “surely not. They’ve only just bought the Gardies”.
As the campus expands more room is required and buying up buildings for sale for the purpose, or investment is a sensible idea. The Bowler and The Gardies have been purchased in...

Need to tidy student 'ghetto' / ODT →
I sincerely hope that any moves to tidy the ghetto are weighed in favour of preservation of the Victorian and Edwardian homes, and particularly the precarious and debilitated workers houses in Hyde and Grange Street areas.
In her thesis, Authentic scarfie flats : perceptions of student housing and cultural heritage in North Dunedin Amy Spurdle discusses the need to ensure the balance of...

Pink Flat the Door - 3 Clyde Street
I’m re-watching the Close Up episode about Scarfie flats that aired last night. There’s a very quick pan past Pink Flat the Door, 3 Clyde Street, which was recently sold, and it appears the door has been painted over (horrified gasp). Can anyone on the ground confirm?
